Celtic oppidum - the area was a trade and administrative center.
907
The first written mention of Brezalauspurc (Salzburg Annals), whereby the name
probably originates from the name of the Slav Duke Braslav.
10th century
The castle becomes border fortress of Hungarian Kingdom.
1291
First city rights given to Bratislava by King Andrew III.
1405
Zigmund the Luxembourg gave Bratislava a status of free royal city, in 1430
the privilege of minting, in 1436 the right to use its coat-of-arms.
1464
Mathias Corvinius confirms city rights; in 1465 he establishes Academia Istropolitana,
the first higher education institution in the territory of Slovakia.
1526
After the Battle of Mohács, Bratislava became the capital of the Hungarian
Kingdom. The city remained the capital for more than 300 years.
1536
The first crownation in Bratislava - Maximilian I. Between 1563 and 1830, 10
kings, 1 queen, and 8 wives of kings were crowned here.
1775
The city walls were destroyed to allow for the expansion of the city.
1805
In the Primatial Palace a peace treaty between Austria and France was signed,
known as The Bratislava Peace settlement.
1809
Napoleon's army besieged the city, afterwards he visited it.
1811
The castle was burnt.
1891
The first bridge over Danube was built and opened to traffic.
1919
January 2 - Czechoslovak army took the city. Bratislava is now the official
name of the city, as a part of Czechoslovakia.
1919
Comenius University was founded.
1938
October 8 - Bratislava became the seat of an autonomous Slovak government.
1939
March 14 - Bratislava became the capital of the Slovak state.
1944
June 16 - allies bombard the Apollo refinery and the western part of the city.
1945
April 4 - the city was liberated by the Soviet Army.
1948
February 25 - the political overthrow, the coup d'etat by the Communist Party,
which took executive power.
1968
October 30 - at Bratislava Castle, the Federation Law was signed.
1969
Bratislava became the capital of the Slovak Socialist Republic.
1990
June - the first free elections after the fall of Communist regime.
1992
September 1 - Slovak parliament votes on a constitution of an independent Slovak
Republic.
1993
January 1 - Bratislava becomes the capital of the independent Slovak Republic.
The area of Bratislava is 367.5 km2. It is divided into 5 administrative districts
and 17 municipalities. The population is about 450,000; the average age is 36.7
years.
2004
May 1 - Slovakia became the member of The European Union.
